Shiraz, 2006 Jade River, Western Australia

What good is a wine without good food ? ;)

Alcohol Content: 14 %
The higher the alcohol content, the higher the residual sugar. Wines from hot climate countries produces grapes that ripens more and shorter time on the tree. Shorter time on trees also mean the grape has lesser time to develop certain tastes, or what they call 'structure'.

$$$$: RM 29.90

Vintage: 2006
2006 should be fairly decent ...

On the label:
The Shiraz is a mid garner red showing lovely blackberry aromas with a hint of spicy pepper. The palate is soft and generous with fruitcake characters leading to a long smooth finish.

According to Wikipedia.com:
The Jade River wines are produced in Western Australia using local grapes from premium wine-growing regions including Margaret River, Geographe and the Great Southern. The wines are bright, fresh and fruit-driven, designed to be consumed as young wines for easy-drinking.

The rainfall in this region is quite high and it is the centre of some of the most magnificent forest country in the world. Manjimup has long been thought of as climatically suitable for wine grape production and perhaps comparable with Mount Barker and Frankland areas in the Great Southern region. It has similar gravelly Marri* soils. Most of the potential vineyard sites and soils around Manjimup are in the drainage basins of the Warren and Donnelly Rivers, at lower altitudes than the town. They are therefore warmer and have better temperature variability characteristics. Manjimup should be thought of as an intermediate between Mount Barker in the Great Southern region and Margaret River, though still perhaps closer to Mount Barker in temperature and potential wine qualities.

On a personal note:-

I would say Shiraz is an acquired taste as it may come off as too strong for some people. When my dear tried it, he didn't like it at all and left the glass happily for me to finish!

This one is one I really liked; spicy, yes, fruitcake heavily laced with Rum, yes, dark cherries yes, Blackcurrants? I'm not too sure about that... All in all, a decent smooth, full bodied, soft  tannin wine. Perfect for those "rough" nights!
